Voice to Parliament
A message to our Australian Stroke Alliance community,
The Australian people are to vote in a yes/no referendum on the Constitution of Australia enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and Government.
A Voice to Parliament will allow Indigenous communities to inform policy and legal decisions that impact their lives.
The Australian Stroke Alliance is committed to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stroke outcomes. Centring diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and experiences is central to our mission.
To support this, we have established Darak, a shared resource designed to centre Indigenous leadership, support cultural awareness, and strengthen community engagement in health research.
We recommend you engage with Darak and help build relationships across our national stroke collaboration as we engage with Australia’s dynamic and diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Australian Stroke Alliance will contribute to the referendum by actively reflecting on the Darak approach to informed public debate. Not everyone will vote ‘yes’, and we fully respect that.
Notwithstanding this, the Board and the Executive of the Australian Stroke Alliance affirm their support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the ‘yes’ position in the referendum. We look forward to the parliamentary process that would follow such an outcome.
